Pawel Swianiewicz – professor of economics at University of Warsaw, Polish President’s adviser on local government issues. Since September 2006 he has been a Head of the Department of Local Development and Policy at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of University of Warsaw. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Executive Board of European Urban Research Association (EURA) and from 2005 to 2010 he was a President of the EURA Board. (2002). Pawel Swianiewicz has considerable experience in teaching and research on local politics, local government finance, local and regional development, and on the implementation of EU regional policies in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including co-ordination of several research projects for the Polish Ministry of Regional Development and co-ordination of the Polish research team participating in the EU 6th Research Framework project SOCCOH –“ The Challenge of Socio-Economic Cohesion in the Enlarged European Union”. For last two decades Pawel Swianiewicz has been involved in several projects focused on decentralization as well as local and regional development in countries of Eastern, South-Eastern and Central Europe (projects conducted by Council of Europe, UNDP, British Department for International Development and Open Society Institute).
